Solid body guitars

Solid body guitars don’t have sound hole or sound board. The only sound source of the solid body guitars is string vibration. The bodies of this type of guitar are usually made of hard wood. The first solid body guitar that was mass produced is Fender Broadcaster which latter renamed to Telecaster. After that, Gibson’s Les Paul came out to compete with Telecaster. Fender’s other famous solid body guitar is Stratocaster which is very versatile and comfortable to play. Some solid body guitars have chambered bodies. These guitars are design to reduce weight or to get some extent acoustic tone.

Semi hollow body guitars

Semi hollow body guitars have a hollow body. But in the middle of the sound box, there is a solid block to reduce feedback to pickups. The sound holes are f shaped and the pickups are as the same as the solid body guitars. The pickups pick both strings and body vibration.  If they are played unplugged, the sound is very small and can’t be used in live performance. However, it is very useful for a quiet practice. Semi hollow body guitars are considered to have better resonance and sustain than solid body guitars. The sound is sweet and plaintive.

Hollow body guitars

Hollow body guitars have bigger and deeper bodies with an archtop which is different from the typical acoustic guitar’s flat top. The hollow body guitars can be played unplugged for their  volume same as acoustic guitars. Hollow body guitar or archtop guitar are consider best jazz guitar and are use for country music as well.
